Alleghany Corporation. The Group's principal activity is to provide property and casualty insurance and reinsurance businesses at Lloyd's of London. The Group through its subsidiary, Alleghany Insurance Holdings LLC (AIHL) and AIHL's subsidiaries RSUI Group, Inc, Capitol Transamerica Corporation, Darwin Professional Underwriters, Inc. and Platte River Insurance Company, is engaged in the property and casualty and fidelity and surety insurance businesses. Property insurance protects an insured against financial loss arising out of loss of property or caused by an insured peril where as Casualty insurance protects the insured against loss arising out of damage to persons or property. Surety bonds, both commercial and contract but Fidelity bonds cover losses arising from employee dishonesty. Through its subsidiary, Alleghany Properties LLC (Alleghany Properties), the Group owns and manages properties in California. On 18-Jul-2007 the Group acquired Employee Direct Corporation.
