Astoria Financial Corporation. The Group's principal activity is to accept deposits and invest them in loans, securities and other funds. It acts as the holding company of Astoria Federal Savings and Loan Association and its subsidiaries and directs plans and coordinates their business activities. The Group invests primarily in one-to-four family mortgage loans, mortgage-backed securities, multi-family mortgage loans and commercial real estate loans. It also invests in construction loans, consumer loans and other loans. In addition the Group invests in US Government and federal agency securities and other investments permitted by federal laws and regulations. It also provides insurance products through contractual agreements with various third party marketing organizations. At 31-Dec-2008, the Group has 85 full-service banking offices.
