BRE Properties Incorporated. The Group's principal activity is that of a real estate investment trust. The Group qualifies as a real estate investment trust under sections 856-860 of the Internal Revenue Code, as amended. The Group owns, acquires, develops and manages multifamily apartment communities in six metropolitan markets of the western United States. At December 31, 2008, its multifamily portfolio had real estate assets with a net book value of approximately $2.9 billion, which included: 72 wholly or majority owned stabilized multifamily communities, aggregating 21,196 units in California, Washington and Arizona; thirteen stabilized multifamily communities owned through joint ventures comprised of 4,080 apartment units; and eight apartment communities in various stages of construction and development.
