Massey Energy Company. The Group's principal activities are to produce, process and sell bituminous, low sulfur coal of steam and metallurgical grades. The steam coal produced by the Group is used as fuel for power plants and the metallurgical coal is used to make coke in the manufacture of steel. The Group also owns and operates the coal unloading, storage and conveying facilities and sells certain non-strategic assets such as timber, oil and gas rights, surface properties and reserves. The operations are conducted through 23 processing and shipping centers known as resource groups. At 31-Jan-2009, the Group operated 66 mines, including 46 underground mines and 20 surface mines in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia. The customers of the Group include utilities and industrial clients. The Group operates in the United States.
